Portal

Opens a door to the Cookieverse.
Overview
The Portal is a building in Cookie Clicker that opens a gateway to the Cookieverse and serves as one of the game’s high-end production buildings. It appears as the third most expensive building in the game, sitting near the top of the midgame-to-lategame progression, and in Cookie Clicker Classic it was already a major leap in production power.
In Cookie Clicker Classic, the Portal cost 1,000,000 cookies at base and produced 6,666 cookies every 5 seconds, or 1,332 cookies per second. That made it 66.66 times faster than a Shipment. Its first purchase also had a unique effect on Grandmas, increasing Grandma output by 5 cookies per 5 seconds and causing C'thulhu-like creatures to replace some Grandmas. Because of its steep cost, the Portal was not efficient until many Alchemy labs had been purchased and their cost scaling had pushed them beyond 1 billion cookies.
The Portal also has a notable place in the game’s synergy history. With the Elder Pact upgrade, each Grandma gains +0.05 base CpS for every Portal, which used to make the Portal the only building in the game that could directly affect the cookie output of other non-Cursor buildings. As of V2.0, that exclusivity no longer applies, since upgrade-type synergies allow two building types to affect each other’s cookie output directly.
A few pieces of trivia help show how much the Portal changed over time. It originally only gave 3,000 cookies every 5 seconds, but after player feedback that it was underpowered, its output was raised to 6,666. Its base price also used to be 1,666,666 cookies before being adjusted. These changes helped define the Portal as a deliberately exaggerated, highly profitable late-game building rather than a merely thematic one.
- The Portal’s production output is strongly tied to its large jump in cost and sits well above earlier buildings in efficiency.
- Its interaction with Grandmas is historically important because it was once tied to one of the earliest building synergies in the game.
- In Classic, the building’s first purchase had a visible visual side effect through the altered Grandma appearance.
