Overview

Pipe to ground is the developer name for the underground pipe entity, which players most commonly call an underground pipe. It is used to connect two pipe networks over a short distance while leaving the intervening tiles empty, making it useful for crossing belts, paths, and other obstacles without exposing a surface pipe line.

An underground pipe can connect to another underground pipe up to 10 tiles away, which means it can span a gap of 9 tiles between its ends. The space between the two ends does not store any fluid; a connected pair of underground pipes has the same total fluid capacity as two regular pipes, regardless of how far apart they are placed within the allowed range.

  • Underground pipes cannot be used to transport fluids beneath lava or space void.
  • Underground pipes are often chosen for compact factory layouts because they preserve build space above ground while maintaining a continuous fluid connection.
