Status Effects

Status effects in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN are accumulating conditions that trigger a powerful payload once their buildup meter fills. They apply to both the player and enemies, making them a core offensive tool against high-HP bosses as well as a survival concern when inflicted on you.

Each effect builds up from repeated hits or environmental exposure, and most can be removed or prevented with a matching Bolus consumable. The table below compares every status effect — how it triggers, what it does, and the item that cures it.

Death Blight

Effect summary

When the death buildup meter fills, the target dies instantly regardless of remaining HP. Caused only by specific Nightlords and certain weapons. Cure on sight or expect a wipe.

Frostbite

Effect summary

When the frostbite buildup meter fills, deals damage and increases damage taken from all sources for a short duration. Strong against high-HP bosses with long phases.

Description

Frostbite is a status effect that builds up from cold-based attacks and, once triggered, deals a burst of damage to the target. It leaves the afflicted enemy weakened for a short time, making it an important pressure tool in combat.

Madness

Effect summary

When the madness buildup meter fills, deals heavy HP and FP damage in a single burst. Some enemies are immune. Effective against humanoid bosses and Nightlords with FP-dependent moves.

Description

Madness is a status effect that builds up on a target and can trigger a frenzy-like breakdown when it fills. It is associated with chaotic, mind-breaking attacks and effects, making it a dangerous crowd-control and burst-damage threat in combat.

Poison

Effect summary

Once the poison meter fills, applies a moderate damage-over-time tick. Reliable against most bosses. Deadly Poison is a stronger variant tied to specific weapons and items.

Description

Poison is a status effect that builds up from certain attacks, hazards, and weapons in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN and inflicts damage over time once triggered. It is used to wear down enemies and can also threaten the player if afflicted, making poison resistance and quick recovery valuable in extended fights.

Scarlet Rot

Effect summary

Once the buildup meter fills, applies a heavy damage-over-time tick that drains HP for an extended duration. The most punishing DoT effect in the game when applied repeatedly.

Description

Scarlet Rot is a status effect that afflicts targets with a devastating rot buildup, causing them to suffer sustained damage over time once it takes hold. It is one of the major harmful conditions in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN, used by certain enemies, hazards, and attacks to pressure players through prolonged attrition rather than immediate burst damage.

Sleep

Effect summary

When the sleep meter fills, the target is briefly stunned for a few seconds. The next attack against a sleeping target deals critical damage. Useful for setting up burst windows.

Description

Sleep is a status effect that causes affected targets to drift into slumber, leaving them unable to act until the effect ends or they are disturbed. It is part of the game’s combat status system and can be used to control enemies by opening them to follow-up attacks.
