Lunatic Cultist

Overview
The Lunatic Cultist is a Hardmode boss that appears at the Dungeon entrance after the four Cultists are defeated. It is the direct trigger for the Lunar Events: defeating it causes the Celestial Pillars to spawn immediately, and the invasion cannot be cancelled except by destroying all four pillars. Because of this, it is often best to postpone the fight until the player is ready to deal with the Lunar Events and the enemies that follow.
The boss begins by briefly appearing at the Mysterious Tablet, where it is immune during its summoning animation. After the tablet breaks, it rises into the air, teleports above the player, and cycles through a fixed attack pattern. At full health, it alternates Fireball, Ice Mist, Lightning Orb, Fireball, Ice Mist, then a ritual. Below 50% health, it gains Ancient Light and its defense drops to 27, changing the pattern to include those attacks as well. In Expert Mode, some of its basic attacks can also be replaced by Ancient Doom.
During its fight, the Lunatic Cultist relies heavily on teleportation and illusion. In the ritual phase, it creates two semi-transparent decoys called Ancient Cultists and surrounds a glowing rune. Hitting the real boss during this phase removes all summoned decoys, while hitting a decoy instantly kills it. If a decoy is left alive, it becomes invincible afterward and fights alongside the boss. The ritual can also summon a Phantasm Dragon, or an Ancient Vision if a Phantasm Dragon is already present. The ritual is especially important because many homing projectiles and minions do not target the real boss during it, although some contact-based or on-hit effects can still work.
Several attacks are easier to handle with positioning. Its fireballs, lightning bolts, and many other projectiles can be blocked by solid blocks, so fighting from behind cover or using weapons that pass through blocks is effective. A yoyo or similar weapon can also be used while staying protected. The Ice Mist attack fires spinning ice shards through blocks, and Lightning Orb only fires when it has a clear line of sight to the player.
Identifying the real Cultist is often the main challenge. The real one has pointed, angry eyes, a line on its hood, and does not emit light, while decoys have round neutral eyes, lack the hood line, and glow. When the ritual starts, the real Cultist is the copy farthest from the player. Hovering over decoys always shows 10000/10000 health, while the real boss shows its true health. Autopause makes identification much easier, and if lock-on is used, the target is broken whenever the boss teleports.
The fight can be risky if the player is unprepared for the Lunar Events, because a Celestial Pillar may spawn near the player immediately after the boss dies. In that case, it is wise to collect the drops quickly and use a Magic Mirror or Recall Potion to return to a safe base before being ambushed.
The Lunatic Cultist has very few practical drops beyond Greater Healing Potions and the Ancient Manipulator, so it is not generally farmed for loot. Its main importance is progression: defeating it unlocks the Lunar Events, Lunar Fragments, and the related Bestiary entries for the Phantasm Dragon and Ancient Vision. It is also the smallest boss in the game and the only one without an awakening message.
