Chest

Chest is a storage item used to hold and organize items. It comes in two sizes: single-wide chests, which have 18 storage slots, and double-wide chests, which have 36 storage slots. Chests are a basic part of base organization and are one of the main ways to store resources, tools, and excess loot.

Locked chests are a related variant that can be found randomly while mining. Each main biome, except for the Clay Caves, has its own unique type of locked chest. Placing the correct key inside unlocks it, converting it into an ordinary single-wide chest and making its contents available to the player.

Chests also have built-in management functions that make sorting large inventories easier:

• Sort automatically sorts and stacks items in the chest together, using the items’ internal ID numbers as the sorting rule.
• Quick stack automatically moves items from the player’s inventory into the chest if those items are already present there, and it creates new stacks when needed.

These functions make chests especially useful for storage rooms, since they reduce manual item shuffling and help keep materials grouped consistently. In practice, a player can use one chest for bulk storage of frequently collected items and rely on quick stacking to deposit matching items quickly after mining, fishing, or crafting. Double-wide chests are better suited to long-term storage or shared material reserves because they provide significantly more space, while single-wide chests are compact and useful for smaller, specialized stockpiles.

Locked chests are most valuable when exploring, since they can be opened without destroying the loot inside. Once unlocked, they behave like regular single-wide chests, so they can be reused for base storage after their contents are taken.
