Long-handed inserter

Overview

The long-handed inserter picks items from the tile directly behind its pickup position rather than from the center of the target entity. This behavior affects how it interacts with belts, chests, and other containers, and must be considered when aligning inputs and outputs for predictable transfers. Since version 0.12.0, long-handed inserters can extract items from roboports and from module inserters, enabling additional logistics setups that involve roboport buffers or nested inserter/module arrangements.
- Use long-handed inserters when you need extra reach to cross a single-tile gap, place items onto platforms or trains offset from the usual tile alignment, or reach across cliffs and other obstacles that block a normal inserter's range.
- Remember that pickup and drop positions depend on the inserter’s orientation and the rule that it takes items from directly behind its pickup point; test alignment with a single inserter before scaling up a layout.
- Long-handed inserters interact with the circuit network and inserter-related GUI controls like other inserters, so they can be enabled, disabled, or set to conditional operation in complex factory logic.
- Combine long-handed inserters with chests, belts, and roboports for flexible logistics designs; they are particularly useful for extracting items from roboport buffers or module inserters where reach is required.
- Visual placement can show a long-handed inserter reaching across cliffs or gaps; consider terrain when planning insertion lines to avoid unexpected placement problems.
