Overview

Obsidian rock is a crafting material used in various recipes. It is found in Forest Deep Caves and Swamp Deep Caves, where it appears as a purple rock. Each rock drops 2-3 Obsidian rock when mined, and Skeleton Miners have a small chance to drop 2-5 of it.

To gather it efficiently, bring a Tungsten Pickaxe or better, since weaker tools cannot mine it. Because it appears in Deep Caves rather than surface biomes, it is usually collected during deeper cave exploration rather than casual early-game mining. The material is therefore tied to progression through underground areas and is most commonly obtained while traveling through the deeper parts of Forest and Swamp cave systems.

A few practical points make Obsidian rock worth keeping in mind:

  • It is a crafting ingredient, so it should generally be saved instead of sold or discarded unless you are certain you do not need the recipes it appears in.
  • Since it drops in small stacks from rocks, mining speed and route efficiency matter more than single-node output.
  • Skeleton Miners can provide extra Obsidian rock, so fighting them is worthwhile when you are already clearing deep cave areas.
  • Because it is found in multiple Deep Cave biomes, players exploring either Forest or Swamp underground can stock up on the same material without needing a special location.

Obsidian rock is visually distinctive enough to stand out from surrounding cave stone, making it easier to notice while moving through deeper underground terrain. As with most cave materials, the main value comes from gathering a steady supply while exploring, then using it later in crafting rather than treating it as a rare drop to be saved only for special occasions.
