Settlement Flag

Overview
A Settlement Flag is the item used to found a player settlement in Necesse. Placing one on the surface creates a new settlement, lets you name it, and causes an Elder to arrive shortly afterward. The flag is also what ties the settlement interface to a specific area of the world, so opening the settlement menu or interacting with the flag lets you manage settlers, storage, work zones, and other settlement settings.
You can find the first Settlement Flag in the storage box inside the Elder’s house when starting a new world. Additional Settlement Flags can also be crafted and placed on islands that do not already contain a player or NPC settlement. Each flag creates its own separate settlement, with its own settlers, quests, raids, and settings.
The actual settlement area is not centered around the flag itself. Instead, the game uses fixed world regions and fits the settlement boundary around the region containing the flag. This means the flag’s exact position inside the settlement does not matter for most management tasks, but it does determine which world region becomes the settlement’s center for expansion and border calculation. Settlements start at 80 × 80 tiles and can be expanded later from the settlement settings tab using money and resources.
A settlement created with a flag becomes the basis for all settlement automation. After founding it, you can recruit settlers from other villages or from NPCs you meet in the world, assign beds, set work priorities, define restriction zones, and configure storage and workstations. The Settlement Flag itself is not a bed, storage container, or workstation; it is the anchor that marks the settlement and opens access to these systems.
A few practical points matter when placing one:
- Put the flag somewhere sensible, because the settlement will expand around the region it occupies.
- If you plan to make multiple settlements, keep in mind that raids and NPC arrivals are tied to the specific settlement they belong to.
- Near settlements, raids can overlap if two settlements are close together, and attackers from one raid may enter the other settlement as well.
- If a settlement is later disbanded, settlers, their equipment, and settlement settings are removed permanently.
Once the flag is down, the next step is usually building houses, beds, and storage so settlers can move in, eat, work, and stay happy.
