Co-op Guide: How to Play Together

Co-op in Mindustry is the multiplayer mode where multiple players team up on the same map to build, defend, and accomplish shared objectives. It matters because cooperation multiplies your build speed, expands defensive coverage, and enables more complex production and attack strategies than solo play.

Modes that support co-op

  • Survival, Attack, and Sandbox maps all support multiplayer co-op play. PvP maps focus on player-versus-player combat but can be configured for team play.
  • Multiplayer supports cross-platform play between PC and mobile.

How to start or join a co-op game

  • To host a game: create a custom game, choose the map you want, then open the pause menu and select "Start Server" (or "Enable Server"/"Open to LAN" depending on UI). This makes the room visible to players on the same network or, if configured, over the internet.
  • To join a game on the same local network: open "Join Game" to see available rooms hosted on the same Wi‑Fi or hotspot, then select the desired room to connect.
  • If players are not on the same local network, use the game's online hosted servers or set up port forwarding so other players can join your hosted server.

Practical co-op tips

  • Role division: assign roles like base-builder/producer, defense manager, and offensive raider to avoid duplicated effort and ensure all tasks are covered.
  • Communication: use chat or voice to coordinate resource routing, where to expand, turret placement priorities, and timing for attacks.
  • Shared resources: all players share the same built structures and inventory on the map; coordinate production chains so multiple players do not separately build the same factory lines inefficiently.
  • Expansion planning: split map areas for expansion and set up logistic throughput (conveyors, sorters, and routers) to feed front-line defenses and turrets.
  • Defense coordination: designate who monitors waves and who handles repairing or replacing damaged walls and turrets during attacks.
  • Sandboxing and testing: use Sandbox mode cooperatively to prototype complex multibuild layouts or weapon combinations before applying them on Survival/Attack maps.

Network and platform notes

  • Local network (same Wi‑Fi/hotspot) is the simplest and most reliable way to play co-op with minimal setup: hosts become visible in Join Game for users on the same network.
  • For internet co-op, ensure the host’s network allows incoming connections (NAT/port forwarding) or use a dedicated online server where available.
  • Cross-platform play between PC and mobile is supported, allowing mixed-device co-op sessions.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

  • Desyncs and lag: large bases, many active entities, and complex logic can cause performance issues. Limit unnecessary processing and spread responsibilities to reduce load.
  • Griefing on public games: prefer private rooms or password-protected servers for cooperative play with trusted friends.
  • Conflicting builds: coordinate before building central infrastructure (power grids, core defenses, smelting lines) to avoid chaotic layouts that hinder efficiency.

Play cooperatively with clear roles, steady communication, and planned production chains to get the most out of Mindustry’s co-op experience.
