Trial Room

Overview

Trial rooms are special rooms found in Caves that resemble treasure rooms at first glance, but instead of a chest they contain a staircase leading to a trial. Entering the staircase starts a challenge that ends with a reward of two chests filled with loot from the cave type the trial was entered from, along with several piles of Coins.

There are two kinds of trial rooms: memory trials and trap trials. Both serve the same purpose of turning a cave find into a short challenge before granting the reward, and both are tied to the cave biome they are found in, so the loot in the reward chests matches that cave’s drop pool.

Trial rooms have a few important map and exploration quirks:

  • They cannot be detected with a Treasure Potion.
  • When hovered over on the map, they appear as a trial entrance.
  • They can be mistaken for treasure rooms from a distance because of their similar layout, so checking for the staircase is the reliable way to identify them.

Because trial rooms are embedded in caves rather than marked as guaranteed loot rooms, they are best treated as a bonus encounter while mining or exploring underground. The reward is worth taking, especially since the chests provide cave-specific loot plus Coins, but the room’s value depends on successfully completing the trial type you find.
