Overview

Leaky Oil Fissure is a geyser that produces Crude Oil. It is one of the ways to obtain a renewable supply of oil in the game, alongside Oil Wells and other oil-related sources. Because its output is hot enough to challenge early industrial materials, it is usually treated as a late-early-game or mid-game resource that needs deliberate heat handling before it can be safely collected and processed.

A Leaky Oil Fissure does not stay idle; instead, it has a brief dormant period between eruptions. That dormant window lasts 40 s to 400 s, averaging 220 s, so the geyser pauses only temporarily before resuming production. Its oil output is too hot for Steel machinery to handle directly, so some form of cooling is required if you want to pipe and store it with pre-space-age materials.

Practical handling options include:

  • A single self-cooling Steam Turbine can cool up to 875 g/s of oil to 130 °C, which is enough for the typical fissure output and stays within the safe range for self-cooling operation.
  • With access to space-age materials, a Thermium Thermo Aquatuner can be placed directly adjacent to the fissure, letting you boil the oil straight into Sour Gas and skip liquid oil infrastructure altogether.
  • Since the fissure is a renewable oil source, it is especially valuable on maps where digging to the Oil Biome is inconvenient or where long-term petroleum production is needed.

In practice, the fissure is best used as part of a controlled oil-processing setup rather than simply tapped and left open. Its heat makes it a useful industrial resource, but also a hazard: if the surrounding area is not insulated, nearby tiles and equipment can overheat quickly.
