Overview
A pit is any empty space not occupied by a ground block or liquid. Pits are a common world feature in Core Keeper and can be created naturally, by digging up ground, or by removing liquid. They can also be filled back in with ground objects or liquid. Bridges can be placed across pits to create safe crossings without damaging any decorations beneath them.
Pits appear throughout the world and often separate distinct areas. Small pits are scattered across many regions, while the world map also contains larger, more recognizable formations: a large circular pit surrounds the inner three biomes, and long branching pits extend outward from it to divide the three outer biomes. In practice, these gaps shape travel routes and often force the player to either build across them or find another way around.
Most ground-based creatures and characters cannot cross pits. Merchants and most enemies are stopped by them as well, which makes pits useful as natural barriers during exploration and base planning. Flying enemies are an exception; for example, Lava Butterfly and Bomb Scarab can move across pits normally.
A few practical points follow from this behavior:
- Pits are useful for controlling enemy movement, since many threats cannot pass them.
- Bridges let the player cross safely while preserving decorations underneath.
- If a pit is created or widened by digging, it can later be filled in with suitable ground objects or liquid.
- Flying enemies ignore the obstacle, so pits are not a complete defense on their own.
Because pits are so common in the world’s layout, they are an important part of navigation from the earliest stages of exploration. They help define biome borders, influence the placement of paths and structures, and create natural chokepoints that can be used both for convenience and for defense.
