Overview

Chickens are the female counterpart to Roosters and can be domesticated and raised by the player. They are a livestock mob rather than a wild animal, so they cannot be found naturally in the world. Instead, they must be obtained by buying them from villages, Farmers, or Animal Keepers. Chickens bought from these sources are already tame.

Once obtained, Chickens can be kept in a pen by leading them with ropes and fencing them in. They are useful as a renewable food and egg source: when killed, a Chicken drops Raw Chicken Legs, and living Chickens lay eggs regularly. Tame Chickens lay partially fertilized eggs rather than fully fertilized ones. These eggs can be placed on Egg Nests, where a tame Rooster can finish fertilizing them so they can hatch into chicks. Only one egg can be placed on a nest per hatch cycle.

To tame a Chicken, feed it Wheat by hand over a long period or keep it near a Feeding Trough stocked with Wheat. This makes Chickens easy to maintain as part of a farm setup, especially when paired with a Rooster for breeding. Because they are livestock that can be enclosed and reproduced, they are one of the most practical early animal sources for a steady supply of eggs and meat.

A few important notes:

  • Attacking village Chickens enrages settlers, making them hostile toward the player.
  • Chickens are not wild spawns, so acquiring the first one always requires a purchase.
  • Ropes can be used to move Chickens into a fenced area for safer containment.
  • Egg Nests are only useful for hatching when a Rooster is present to complete fertilization.
  • Feeding Troughs can automate part of the taming process by allowing nearby Chickens to eat Wheat without being hand-fed continuously.
