Seamless Co-op Guide: Setup & How to Play
Seamless co-op in Elden Ring: Nightreign enables drop-in/drop-out multiplayer across roguelike, battle‑royale style expeditions where teamed players share victory, defeat and scoring consequences. This page explains how co-op session behaviour, scoring, disconnections and player rank interactions work so you can plan invites and recover from interruptions without unexpected penalties.
What seamless co-op means in Nightreign
- Sessions are multiplayer-focused and built around short, repeatable expeditions with predefined Nightfarer characters and progression through items and equipment between runs.
- Co-op is seamless: players can join and leave active sessions (drop in/out) without needing to restart the run for everyone; the game treats reconnections and permanent departures differently for scoring and penalties.
Victory and score distribution
- A successful expedition grants 200 points per victory to participating players.
- Additional score modifiers:
- +50 if the player was playing on a Depth one rank higher than their own.
- -50 if playing on a Depth one rank lower than their own.
- +100 if the map's points of interest were concealed during the run.
- +100 if the Nightlord (final boss) remained concealed until the final day of the expedition.
- Co-op does not reduce score gains on victory — teammates who disconnect do not reduce the awarded points when the expedition succeeds.
Defeat and score loss rules
- Score loss on defeat depends on your Depth Rank:
- Depth Rank 1: no points lost on defeat.
- Depth Rank 2: 0 points lost.
- Depth Rank 3: -200 points.
- Depth Rank 4: -400 points.
- Depth Rank 5: -600 points.
- Additional defeat timing modifiers:
- -200 extra if defeated on Day 1 of the expedition.
- -100 extra if defeated on Day 2.
- 0 extra if defeated while facing the Nightlord (final confrontation).
- Depth rank mismatch modifiers on defeat:
- 50 fewer points lost if the player was playing on a Depth one rank higher than their personal rank.
- 50 more points lost if playing on a Depth one rank lower than their personal rank.
Disconnections and how they affect co-op scoring
- Leaving the session and never reconnecting is treated the same as being defeated: you incur the defeat penalties described above.
- Leaving but later reconnecting does not immediately deduct points at the moment of leaving; however, any penalties you incurred during that abandonment (for example if the team ultimately loses) will be applied during your next expedition.
- If any teammate has disconnected at the time of defeat or disconnection penalties being applied, the points lost by players are halved. This halving affects penalties on defeat or disconnection; it does not change the points awarded for a successful expedition.
Practical tips for co-op sessions
- Invite players of similar Depth Rank when possible to avoid the +/-50 modifiers on both wins and losses.
- If you plan to conceal the map’s points of interest or keep the Nightlord hidden until the last day, coordinate with teammates because those choices grant +100 score each and are valuable for ranking.
- If a teammate needs to leave early, have them attempt to reconnect before the run ends; a simple disconnect will not immediately deduct points but permanent absence will count as defeat.
- Since disconnected teammates halve defeat penalties, if a run looks unwinnable a teammate intentionally disconnecting will reduce the penalty impact for everyone who remains — but this also treats the disconnected player as defeated for their personal scoring.
- New players at Depth Rank 1 can experiment without fear of point loss on defeats.
Context for the mode
- Nightreign is a standalone spin-off focusing on these multiplayer expeditions, with eight predefined Nightfarer characters and roguelike progression across runs. The scoring and co-op rules above are part of that streamlined multiplayer design and determine progression incentives and risk management during sessions.
