Overview

Fill 1 barrel is the recipe that packs a fluid into a Barrel item so the fluid can be carried, stored, or transported as an inventory object. The recipe consumes one Empty crude oil barrel plus the corresponding quantity of a fluid and produces a Barrel that represents that fluid (for example, a Crude oil barrel or a Water barrel). Filling barrels is the in-game way to move fluids without using pipes.

The fluids that can be produced by the fill-barrel recipes include Crude oil, Heavy oil, Light oil, Lubricant, Petroleum gas, Sulfuric acid, Water, Fluoroketone (Hot), and Fluoroketone (Cold). Each fill recipe converts one Empty crude oil barrel and the appropriate amount of the specified fluid into a single filled Barrel item for that fluid.

Practical notes and usage:

  • Barrels allow fluid transfer where laying pipes is impractical, such as remote resource patches or when crossing long distances without continuous piping.
  • Filled Barrels are standard items and can be moved by inserters, belts, trains, and logistic robots, and they stack in inventory and containers like other items.
  • The reverse operation (emptying a filled Barrel) returns the fluid to a machine or tank and gives back an Empty crude oil barrel; emptying uses a corresponding emptying recipe.
  • Producing Empty crude oil barrel items is required before filling; the Empty crude oil barrel itself is craftable and is returned by emptying operations.
  • Barrel fill and empty operations are part of fluid handling workflows and integrate with chemical production chains when fluids must be moved as items rather than through pipes.
  • Barrels are useful for intermittent transfers, storage buffering, export/import of fluids by train, and for feeding remote refineries or chemical plants when piping is not feasible.

Do not rely on barrels for continuous high-throughput fluid networks; pipes and pumps remain the primary solution for steady-state fluid distribution. Use barrel filling when mobility, modular logistics, or spot transfers are the priority.
