Steel furnace

The steel furnace is a burner-based smelting building item used to process ores and craft plates. It is a direct performance upgrade over the stone furnace, producing twice the output rate for iron plates, copper plates, stone bricks, and steel plates while consuming the same amount of fuel. The steel furnace moves items from a replaced stone furnace into itself when placed directly on top of that stone furnace, and it cannot be placed in space.

A steel furnace consumes coal at a rate of 0.0225 per second when active. Its production rates are exactly double those of a stone furnace for the supported outputs: iron plate and copper plate at 0.625 items per second, stone brick at 0.625 items per second, and steel plate at 0.125 items per second. These rates match the electric furnace’s per-item output for those recipes as listed in comparison tables, with the steel furnace distinguished by being a burner device that requires fuel.

Steel furnaces can replace stone furnaces without the stone furnace being mined first. To replace a stone furnace, click on the existing stone furnace while holding a steel furnace in the player’s hand; the stone furnace is removed and the steel furnace is placed in its location. All items that were inside the stone furnace (input, output, and fuel) are automatically transferred into the newly placed steel furnace.

Steel furnaces are subject to the same placement constraints as other burner devices. Specifically, they cannot be placed in open space environments where burner items are restricted.
