Decor & Morale Guide: Using Overlays to Zone and Beautify Bases
Decor in Mindustry consists of environmental block overlays—non-essential blocks placed on top of tiles to add visual variety and small benefits. They do not replace terrain but sit atop base terrain blocks to change aesthetics and occasionally provide gameplay effects.
Purpose and use
- Primary purpose is visual: overlays alter how a tile looks to make bases and maps more interesting and thematic.
- Secondary purpose: some overlays grant minor benefits or interactions (for example, providing cover, distinguishing zones, or indicating resource-rich areas). Always check the specific overlay description for any gameplay effects; most are purely decorative.
Placement rules
- Overlays are placed on top of an existing environmental block (ground tile). They cannot replace or be placed on non-environmental blocks (buildings, conveyors, turrets) and typically occupy a single tile.
- Overlays behave like terrain decorations: they do not block building placement unless the specific overlay description states otherwise.
Common overlay types (examples)
- Foundation and metal-themed overlays: used to make industrial floors or walls (e.g., Foundation, Metal Tiles, Metal Wall variants).
- Crystal and ore-themed overlays: decorate mineral or exotic regions (e.g.,
Crystal Blocks, Ore Wall — Tungsten).
- Graphitic or specialty material overlays: create unique visual zones using materials like graphite.
- Simple material overlays: use basic items or liquids to change tile appearance (some overlays reference items like Copper or liquids like Liquid Nitrogen as thematic textures).
When to use decor
- Improve readability of your base layout — mark production areas, storage yards, power plants, or defensive rings with different floor overlays.
- Enhance map aesthetics for custom maps or campaigns to match biomes (icy, metallic, crystalline).
- Use as visual cues for teammates in multiplayer to quickly identify zones.
Performance and practical considerations
- Overlays are lightweight and designed not to affect pathfinding or significantly impact performance.
- Because overlays are placed on tiles, plan expansions and conveyor routing so overlays do not need to be removed frequently.
Summary
Decor overlays let you customize terrain appearance and subtly communicate function within your base without replacing core gameplay tiles. Use foundations, metal/ore/crystal overlays, and themed textures to make bases clearer and more visually appealing.
