Overview

Tungsten is a high-tier industrial ore and crafting material in Mindustry. It functions as a late-game resource used for heavy-duty structures, advanced conveyors and routers, reinforced containers, high-end walls and doors, specialized projectiles, and several fabricators and assemblers. Tungsten has the highest hardness value of all ores in the game, making it one of the most difficult resources to extract and therefore a strategic bottleneck for many late-game builds.

Tungsten’s in-game hardness is 5, which restricts which drills can harvest it. On Serpulo, the Airblast Drill is the only drill that can mine Tungsten; it yields a lower output per tile than Thorium. Although the Impact Drill has sufficient drilling power to break Tungsten in mechanical terms, the game is coded so the Impact Drill does not mine Tungsten as part of progression design. These restrictions make secure supply lines, protected mining outposts, and efficient transport a necessity when you want to base late-game production on Tungsten.

Tungsten is used directly in high-end construction and in refabrication recipes. Notable uses include advanced production buildings and defensive components, large and reinforced walls, several forms of reinforced fluid storage and pumps, powerful weapons or ammo types, and refabricators for units, ships, tanks, and Moss (Mech) platforms. It is also a component in a number of heat- and surge-related furnaces and crucibles, and in projects that require heat management like Electric Heaters and Heat Redirectors.

Practical notes and strategy:

  • Mining and logistics: because Tungsten is hard to mine and scarce, place mining operations behind layered defenses or far from frequent enemy raids. Use conveyors, surge conveyors, or payload systems to move ore to your main base efficiently.
  • Drill selection: use the Airblast Drill on Serpulo for Tungsten extraction. Do not rely on Impact Drills for Tungsten, as they are intentionally prevented from mining it despite sufficient drill power.
  • Production priorities: prioritize Tungsten for buildings that unlock further progression (refabricators, assemblers, cores) or for structures that dramatically improve factory throughput (Surge Crucible, Carbide Crucible, Synthesizer). Avoid wasting Tungsten on low-utility decorations or nonessential upgrades.
  • Defensive and structural use: Tungsten is required for several heavy defensive items such as Tungsten Wall, Large Tungsten Wall, Blast Door, Reinforced Surge Wall variants, and reinforced containers and vaults. Use Tungsten where durability and blast resistance matter most.
  • Ammo and unit gear: Tungsten is used in certain projectile types (e.g., Breach, Disperse) and in high-end unit/vehicle fabrications via tank, ship, and Moss refabricators; reserve some Tungsten to support unit production during major offensives.
  • Heat-related recipes: several heat-processing buildings (Electric Heater, Heat Redirector, Slag Incinerator, Carbide/Surge Crucible) require Tungsten in their construction or operation chains, so factor Tungsten supply into any factory centered on advanced material synthesis.

In real-world terms, Tungsten is a dense, hard transition metal with symbol W and atomic number 74, notable for having an extremely high melting point; this real-world durability is reflected in the game by Tungsten’s role as a material for heavy-duty and high-temperature applications.
