Oil

Used in advanced material production and as incendiary ammunition.
Overview
Oil is a liquid resource in Mindustry. It functions as a raw fluid that appears on the map and is associated with extraction from specific terrain; it is processed and consumed by other buildings and systems within the game economy.
Oil extraction in the game requires the extractor structure to be placed over certain floor types. Specifically, oil extractors must be built on top of
Salt, Sand, Dark Sand, or
Shale floor tiles in order to operate and produce Oil. The presence of these floor tiles determines where natural Oil deposits can be tapped.
In real-world terms, naturally occurring black oil corresponds to petroleum. Petroleum is a crude mixture that can be refined into fuels and be used as a feedstock for plastics and other chemical products; when petroleum reaches the surface and lighter components evaporate, it commonly forms tar. The game’s Oil is inspired by this real-world material and represents a similar raw hydrocarbon resource within the game world.
Practical notes and reminders:
- Oil requires an extractor placed on Salt, Sand, Dark Sand, or Shale floor tiles to be harvested.
- The current in-game icon for Oil was contributed by the artist nullotte.
- Conceptually and thematically, Oil in Mindustry parallels petroleum: it is a crude resource that is typically refined or used as an intermediate material in crafting and production chains.
