Appears to be fossilized plant matter, formed long before the seeding event.

Overview

Coal is a basic raw resource found in the Frozen Forest sector and serves as an early-game fuel and crafting material. In Mindustry it functions primarily as a combustible resource: it fuels power generators, is processed into advanced materials, and can be loaded as specialized ammunition in at least one turret. Coal connects early-field resource gathering with mid-tier production chains and weaponization options.

Coal can be consumed directly by generators to produce electricity. It powers Combustion Generator and Steam Generator buildings. As a crafting input, Coal is used to create Graphite and is also involved in recipes that produce Silicon. Coal can be loaded as the ammo type for Scorch-class weaponry. Coal also appears as an ingredient in at least one unit crafting recipe.

Practical notes and strategy:

  • Resource nodes: Coal spawns naturally in Frozen Forest maps, making those biomes important sources for early coal supply. Prioritize mining and conveyor networks from these deposits to secure steady fuel and materials.
  • Power use: Feed Coal into Combustion Generators and Steam Generators to jump-start electricity when other fuels or power sources are unavailable. Use coal-fired generation early while you build higher-tier reactors and energy infrastructure.
  • Production chains: Route Coal into smelters and fabricators to produce Graphite and Silicon. These intermediate materials unlock more advanced buildings and technologies, so maintaining a coal input helps progression.
  • Ammo and defense: Some turrets accept Coal as ammo (notably Scorch-class mounts). Stockpiling coal can provide flexible defense options if those turrets are part of your base layout.
  • Logistics: Coal is bulky compared to higher-tier ores; plan conveyor throughput and storage accordingly. Balance coal allocation between generators, factories, and turrets to avoid bottlenecks.
  • Real-world note: Coal in reality is a carbon-rich fossil fuel formed from ancient plant matter and is widely used for energy generation with significant carbon emissions. This real-world context is reflected loosely by Coal’s role as a primary combustible resource in the game.

Do not rely on Coal as a long-term sole power solution; transition to more efficient fuels and generators as your economy matures while using Coal to bridge the early- to mid-game.
