Overview

Silicon Crucible is a mid-to-late game production building that refines Sand and Coal into Silicon, using Pyratite as an auxiliary heat source to increase throughput. It was introduced in the 6.0 update and received a durability buff in a later release (health increased from 360 to 395 in Build 136 of version 7.0). The Crucible consumes significant power and benefits greatly from placement on heated terrain tiles to boost production speed.

The basic recipe consumes Coal and Sand and requires Pyratite as a heat input. Under standard conditions the building draws 240 power/s, consumes Coal (2.666/s), Sand (4/s) and Pyratite (0.666/s), and produces Silicon (5.333/s) with a base production time of 1.5 seconds. Production time and effective throughput are modified by the tile the Crucible is placed on and by any additional heat provided by Pyratite.

Placement and tile modifiers reduce production time per tile step. On most Serpulo tiles the production time remains 1.5s. Placement on Hot Rock and Magma Rock grants large efficiency bonuses: Hot Rock increases efficiency by about +67% overall (roughly +7.4% per tile), while Magma Rock provides about +101% efficiency (displaying as 200% efficiency in-game), roughly +11.2% per tile. These bonuses directly accelerate production and lower the effective production time, making heated terrain the prime location for Silicon Crucibles.

Practical notes and strategies:

  • Power and resource throughput: Silicon Crucible is power-hungry and requires steady inputs of Coal, Sand, and Pyratite. Use high-capacity conveyors, overflow routing, and large power grids to avoid stalls.
  • Use Pyratite as both a resource input and a heat catalyst; stacking Pyratite throughput and placing the Crucible on Hot Rock or Magma Rock multiplies gains.
  • Terrain prioritization: situate Crucibles on Magma Rock where possible for the highest silicon output per building. If Magma Rock is unavailable, Hot Rock tiles still give substantial gains compared to baseline tiles.
  • Scaling: group multiple Crucibles on heated tiles and feed them with centralized Pyratite and heavy conveyor lines to maximize silicon production for late-game factories and high-tech crafting.
  • Durability and defense: the increased health makes the Crucible slightly more resilient, but it remains valuable and worth protecting—place turrets or walls around production clusters on contested maps.
  • Logistics: because output is dense, use junctions and overflow chests to prevent backups; pair Crucibles with silicon sinks (factories, storages) sized for peak throughput.

The Silicon Crucible is the primary method for large-scale silicon generation when Coal and Sand are abundant and heated terrain or Pyratite supply is available; optimizing tile placement and resource routing is key to extracting its full production potential.
