Official description

Generates large amounts of power when heated. Requires cyanogen as a stabilizer. Power output and cyanogen requirements are proportional to heat input. Explodes if insufficient cyanogen is provided.

Overview

The Flux Reactor is an Erekir power generator that produces power from supplied heat and consumes Cyanogen to stay stable. It is one of the strongest base power blocks in the game, and its output scales directly with the amount of heat it receives: each unit of heat adds 106 power per second. At maximum heat, it also requires 9 Cyanogen per second to operate continuously.

Its main mechanic is instability. If the reactor is not given enough Cyanogen, instability begins to build as it runs; when the bar fills, the reactor explodes with a minor blast. Supplying sufficient Cyanogen reverses this instability, so the block is safe only when its fuel supply is maintained. Unlike the Thorium Reactor, this instability accumulation is constant rather than tied to the same kind of buildup behavior, and unlike some other reactor-type blocks it does not leave behind a ghost block for rebuilding after an explosion.

Because power output is tied to heat, the best setup is usually one that can provide a high, efficient heat source rather than many small ones. Phase Heaters and the Neoplasia Reactor are especially effective, since their heat production makes them far more efficient than basic heating methods. The reactor can be heated with Electric Heaters, but that approach is comparatively expensive for the power gained. A full heat setup can also be arranged to support a Cyanogen Synthesizer at the same time, though the ratios are awkward and often require careful balancing.

A few practical notes make it easier to use:

  • The reactor cannot exceed 100% efficiency.
  • If it runs without Cyanogen, instability will steadily rise until it detonates.
  • Replenishing Cyanogen stops and reverses instability buildup.
  • Phase Heaters and Neoplasia Reactors are the most efficient heat sources for this block.
  • If you are also feeding a Cyanogen Synthesizer, account for the extra heat needed so the whole system still meets the reactor’s requirements.

The Flux Reactor was added in Build 137. Its base power generation was increased in Build 147, and its build cost and build time were adjusted again in Build 149, along with a further boost to base output. It has the highest base power generation of any block across both planets, and it can benefit from speed boosts as well; with a 300% boost from a Navanax, its output rises dramatically.

Despite being named a reactor, a powered Flux Reactor does not attract Eclipses.
