Creates surge alloy from silicon and metals constituent in slag. Requires heat.

Overview

Surge Crucible is a production building that converts Silicon and Slag into Surge Alloy while consuming electrical power and Heat. It was introduced in Build 136 and has been adjusted in subsequent updates to change power draw, input consumption, efficiency cap, and output rate. The block serves as the primary means to produce Surge Alloy, a late-game material used by advanced structures and units.

The recipe requires Silicon and Slag as raw inputs, consumes 90 power units per second, and requires 40 Heat to operate. Each production cycle takes 45 ticks (0.75 seconds) and yields Surge Alloy at an effective rate of 1.33333 items per second when running at maximum efficiency. The machine’s internal parameters were tuned in later builds: silicon consumption was raised to 4/sec, slag to 160/sec, Heat usage raised to 40 units, and output increased to the current rate while the maximum efficiency cap was reduced to 100%.

Practical notes and strategy:

  • Place Surge Crucibles close to steady Heat sources (for example Heat Generators or other buildings that output Heat) or in an area where you can reliably pump Heat; the building will not run efficiently without meeting the Heat requirement.
  • Ensure robust power supply: Surge Crucible uses 90 power/sec, so combine with adequate power generation and buffering to avoid stalls during production spikes.
  • Maintain high-throughput lines for both Silicon (4/sec) and Slag (160/sec). Slag is consumed in large quantities, so dedicated slag collection or recycling is important for sustained Surge Alloy production.
  • Because production time is short (0.75s), multiple Surge Crucibles can be chained or paralleled to scale output quickly; spreading them across several heat sources or using centralized Heat distribution helps prevent single-point bottlenecks.
  • The reduced maximum efficiency (100%) means the building no longer benefits from overclocking above its designed cap as much as earlier versions did; plan layout and power to operate at peak efficiency rather than relying on large overdrive.
  • Use item conveyors, routers, and overflow management to prevent input starvation. Surge Alloy output can be fed into storage or directly to fabricators and factories that require it for advanced recipes.
  • Slag typically contains the metal components needed for Surge Alloy production; treating slag as a resource rather than waste improves overall resource efficiency.

Historical changes: added in Build 136; power draw was lowered from 120 to 90 in Build 149. In Build 155 silicon and slag consumption were increased and Heat use raised to 40 units while output per second was increased to 1.33333 and production time shortened to 0.75 seconds; the maximum efficiency cap was reduced to 100%.
