Tallow

Overview
Tallow is a solid element used as a crafting ingredient and as a feedstock for Biodiesel. It is notable for its low melting point: when heated to 83°C it changes into Biodiesel, making it one of the easier materials to process if you want to convert it rather than store it in its solid form.
In practice, Tallow is mostly relevant as a mid-chain resource for manufacturing. Because it can be transformed into Biodiesel by heat, it can serve as a convenient source material for any setup that needs a liquid fuel precursor or wants to use its phase change intentionally. Its recipes make it more useful as an industrial input than as a building material, so it is usually stockpiled and routed to production rather than left sitting in general storage.
A few practical points are worth keeping in mind:
- Tallow changes state at a relatively low temperature, so it should be stored and transported with attention to heat exposure if you want to keep it solid.
- If your colony is producing Tallow in quantity, it can be worth planning a dedicated storage or processing line so it does not accidentally melt.
- Since it is used as a crafting ingredient, keeping a reserve on hand is useful before committing the whole supply to Biodiesel conversion.
Overall, Tallow is a specialty resource: not something most colonies build around directly, but a material that becomes important once you begin treating temperature control and fuel production as part of your industrial base.
