Overview

Elements that can emit from natural tiles or debris periodically release mass into the surrounding world instead of remaining fully contained. Natural tiles check their emission chance every tick, which is 0.2 seconds, and the listed emission values are per direction. With the exception of Polluted Water, which can only emit upward, a natural tile evaluates all four directions, effectively multiplying its output by four. Polluted Mud needs to rest on an Airflow Tile to emit downward because gravity affects it.

For debris and bottled materials, emission follows different rules and is usually only an approximation of the true behavior. Many debris emissions are well modeled by a power curve based on mass, with the actual release rate depending on the material. Some sources emit at a fixed interval, while others become more frequent as mass increases. In all cases, emitted material is always contaminated with germs proportional to the amount of source material left, not just with Slimelung-related sources.

A few practical interactions stand out:

  • Mined Oxylite debris emits the same amount of Oxygen that it would have emitted as a natural tile.
  • Slime emits Polluted Oxygen at a rate that does not depend on its total mass, so breaking it into smaller pieces on Conveyor Rail can make it emit much faster.
  • Bottled Polluted Water emits in direct proportion to its mass, so it does not suffer diminishing returns as it gets larger. Because bottles are not limited per cell, this is useful for rapid Clay production through Deodorizers and, by extension, Ceramics.
  • Transporting Bleach Stone is an easy way to create a Chlorine Gas atmosphere for disinfection.

Some materials only emit in one form. Polluted Mud and Corium emit as natural tiles, not as debris. Bleach Stone and Slime emit as debris, not as natural tiles. Corium emitting Nuclear Waste uses the same clean bubble animation associated with Oxylite releasing Oxygen.
