Overview

Polluted Mud is a solid resource tile that behaves like other fallable materials such as snow and Mud. When dug up, it becomes debris that off-gasses Polluted Oxygen and gradually loses mass over time. This happens even if the debris is placed in a Storage Bin, so simply storing it does not stop the loss. To prevent off-gassing, keep it submerged in liquid or seal it under at least 1.8 kg/tile of gas pressure.

Like other volatile materials, Polluted Mud is most safely handled while submerged or otherwise pressurized. If left exposed, it will steadily convert itself into polluted gas, making it awkward to store in bulk unless you have containment ready. Its gravity behavior also means loose tile forms will fall downward, which can matter when mining it from ceilings or unstable structures.

Polluted Mud can be processed in a Sludge Press into Polluted Dirt and Polluted Water at a 150 kg to 60 kg + 90 kg ratio. This makes it a convenient source of both dirt and polluted water, especially in the early game. In Spaced Out, it is particularly useful because starting areas often have very little natural Dirt available, so Polluted Mud can help support early farming and resource conversion.

  • Use a Sludge Press to split it into Polluted Dirt and Polluted Water.
  • Store it submerged or under high gas pressure to stop off-gassing.
  • Do not rely on a Storage Bin alone to preserve it.
  • Be careful when mining it from above, since it falls like other gravity-affected debris.
