Overview

Phosphorus Gas is a gaseous form of phosphorus in Oxygen Not Included. It is relevant mainly as an atmosphere for food storage and spoilage, since food placed in Phosphorus Gas is treated as being in a polluted atmosphere.

That makes it unsuitable for preserving perishables: polluted atmospheres have the fastest spoilage rate of the standard atmospheric types, and they also prevent the normal sterile-atmosphere benefit that stops spoilage from atmosphere entirely. In practice, food in Phosphorus Gas will spoil as though it were in polluted oxygen, so refrigeration and deep-freeze temperatures matter even more if food is stored in this gas.

For food handling, the important interaction is that cooking still removes food poisoning germs, but storage in Phosphorus Gas does not provide any preservation advantage. Only a Deep Freeze in a Sterile Atmosphere fully preserves food; otherwise, temperature continues to affect spoilage according to the usual rules.
