Overview

Insulite is a buildable solid material used for extreme thermal insulation. It has very low thermal conductivity, making it one of the best materials for limiting heat flow in tiles and pipes. It is produced in the Molecular Forge from Abyssalite, Isoresin, and Reed Fiber, and is typically used when a colony needs a stronger thermal barrier than ordinary insulation materials can provide.

In practice, Insulite is most valuable in places where temperature control matters more than resource cost. It is especially useful for enclosing hot industrial areas, protecting cryogenic storage, or reducing heat bleed in long pipe runs. Even so, the game’s heat-transfer rules matter as much as the material itself: insulated tiles and insulated pipes use different heat equations from regular tiles and pipes, and those mechanics often make them more effective than simply building a normal tile out of Insulite.

  • Insulite has a thermal conductivity of 0.00001, which places it in the strongest insulation range.
  • It is far less conductive than ordinary building materials, but insulated tiles and insulated pipes made from other materials can still outperform regular tiles or pipes made from Insulite because of the way insulated structures calculate heat exchange.
  • For this reason, regular Insulite tiles are useful, but insulated tiles and insulated pipes made from suitable materials often do the job better.
  • If maximum thermal isolation is the goal, using Insulite in combination with insulated constructions and, where appropriate, vacuum is the most reliable approach.

When Insulite is melted, it produces Liquid Tungsten and Sour Gas. Its high melting point means it remains stable in extremely hot environments, which matches its role as a late-game insulation material rather than a general-purpose building resource.
