Overview

Liquid Hydrogen is the ultra-cold liquid form of Hydrogen Gas and one of the late-game materials used in the coldest industrial and aerospace setups. It can be produced by cooling Hydrogen Gas down to -255.15°C, but doing so is one of the game’s late-stage challenges. The usable temperature window is extremely narrow: its freezing point and boiling point are only 7°C apart, making safe cooling of Hydrogen Gas with Liquid Hydrogen nearly impossible without very careful temperature control.

Outside of player-made production, Liquid Hydrogen can be obtained from space. In the base game, it is available from helium giant destinations on the starmap. In Spaced Out, it can also be harvested from renewable space points of interest in metallic asteroid fields, where it appears at a rate of 67.5–202.5 kg per cycle. On the relevant space source in Spaced Out, its reported regeneration rate is 132–165 kg per cycle.

Because it is a renewable space resource in some destinations, Liquid Hydrogen is most valuable when integrated into a stable rocket and cryogenic infrastructure rather than treated as a one-time stockpile. Its extreme temperature requirements make transportation and storage difficult, so players usually plan extraction around direct use or tightly controlled containment.

  • In space, it can be gathered repeatedly from specific map sources rather than mined out once and gone.
