Swampy Biome

Overview
The Swampy Biome is a temperate starting biome found on the Quagmiris Asteroid in the Spaced Out! DLC. It is the swamp-themed early game region, built around polluted materials rather than clean ones, and it often gives players a rough opening while also providing strong long-term resource access. Its terrain commonly includes Mud, Polluted Mud, Polluted Dirt, Polluted Water, Swamp Chard, and some clean Water, with nearby biomes such as the Wasteland Biome, Tundra Biome, Barren Biome, and Jungle Biome shaping how the start develops.
Across its variants, the biome can appear in several different forms, including base, slush, inactive, steamy, and landing site. Its temperature ranges are generally temperate in the normal and steamy forms, while the slush variant is much colder. The biome may contain blob-shaped rooms or tall, thin rooms filled with Carbon Dioxide, Polluted Water, Slime, and Algae; the slush version swaps in Water alongside Polluted Water, and some variants include geodes containing Sand, Sandstone, and Igneous Rock. Depending on the variant, it can also contain ruins, and the base or slush versions may include a Cool Steam Vent and a Natural Gas Geyser.
The Swampy Biome is notable for being messy but resource-rich. It is often surrounded by polluted water, and digging carelessly can contaminate cleaner water supplies as Mud and Polluted Mud fall like sand, while Polluted Dirt can weaken and collapse under pressure. A large cistern below the base is a common early goal so liquids and falling debris can be managed before the area turns into a flood hazard. Because the biome starts with no bacteria, the player must supply any needed germs themselves rather than worrying about an initial disease problem.
It also has a distinct progression profile: the start is difficult, but the mid-game is easier because the surrounding terrain tends to cool the area over time instead of heating it like a Terra start would. The region’s infinite water sources are both cold, in the form of Cool Slush Geysers and Cool Salt Slush Geysers, which can be paired with a Liquid Tepidizer rather than relying on a plastic-heavy Aquatuner and Steam Turbine setup. The nearby Jungle Biome may also provide a Hydrogen Vent, a Cool Steam Vent, and a drecko spawn, which supports exosuit production.
- The biome’s polluted materials can support oxygen production and early industry, but many of them require refinement before they become truly useful.
- Breathable air is usually not the main problem here because the biome contains large amounts of materials that off-gas.
- Bog Buckets are one of its starter plants, and they are extremely water-hungry, so they are best used only while the abundant early water lasts.
- Because the biome is not rich in clean starting infrastructure, players often delay full air systems for quite a while and instead focus on containment and resource cleanup.
- The biome’s cold water sources and nearby geysers make it especially strong for stable long-term base planning once the opening mess is under control.
