Overview

The Forest Biome is a starting biome found on the Folia Asteroid. It is one of the early-game biomes and is notable for offering more plant-related support than the usual starting areas, with several variants that change its temperature and embedded resources. Baseline generation contains no liquids; any water found in the biome comes from terrain features rather than the biome itself.

The biome can appear in several versions, including Start, Mini Water, Mini Oxygen, Mini Metal, and hot or frozen variants of those types. The Start variant contains Oxylite for early oxygen production and more Aluminum Ore, and it can include an Oxyfern Cave and a Phosphorite Deposit. The Mini Water variant guarantees a Small Water Lake in the center. The Mini Oxygen variant contains Oxylite and a Phosphorite Deposit. The Mini Metal variant contains more Aluminum Ore. Hot variants are typically around 30 °C, while the Frozen variant is around -30 °C and adds Snow, with a Small Frozen Lake feature.

Common terrain features in the biome include:

  • Small Water Lake: a Water lake surrounded by Oxygen, Dirt, Igneous Rock, and Aluminum Ore.
  • Small Frozen Lake: a Snow, Ice, and Oxygen room surrounded by Ice, Dirt, Igneous Rock, and Aluminum Ore.
  • Oxyfern Cave: an Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide room surrounded by Igneous Rock and Dirt, with four planted Oxyferns.
  • Phosphorite Deposit: a Phosphorite deposit with some Carbon Dioxide.

The Forest Biome can contain several geyser types, including Volcano, Minor Volcano, Hot Polluted Oxygen Vent, Carbon Dioxide Geyser, Cool Salt Slush Geyser, Cool Slush Geyser, Hydrogen Vent, Cool Steam Vent, and Chlorine Vent. These can make the biome a useful early exploration target, especially if you are looking for renewable water or additional industrial resources.

For survival, the biome rewards fast exploration. Its early oxygen support from Oxylite and wild Oxyferns can help, but it is not a safe substitute for a proper oxygen setup for long. Rapid scouting is important because the biome may hide useful metal deposits and water-generating features, and an infinite water source may come from a Cool Steam Vent or two. It also does not feature Hatches normally, though one is guaranteed at a specific location.
