Wisp Fountain

Attracts wisps. They mostly come at night... mostly.
Overview
The Wisp fountain is a craftable decorative building that attracts wisps in low-light conditions. It is used as a source of wisps for the Wisp Torch and related mist-clearing progression, and it becomes active when darkness is sufficient, especially around evening and during rain. When hovered over in the right conditions, its status text changes to reflect how many wisps are gathering around it.
A new wisp joins the fountain every 30 seconds, with up to three wisps typically present at first. As the night goes on, the number can eventually rise higher, with reports of up to nine wisps appearing near morning. Once the fountain has three wisps, the status changes from “The wisps are coming.” to “The wisps are dancing.” This usually indicates that the fountain has reached its normal cap, although more can appear in unusual cases.
Wisps begin to appear around 18:00 and also spawn when it is raining. They will fly away and disappear once daylight returns if they are not caught in time. During the day, the fountain instead shows that the wisps demand darkness. In practice, this means that wisp farming is tied to keeping the area dark enough for long enough for the wisps to accumulate.
- If multiple Wisp fountains are built nearby, they share the same maximum wisp pool.
- To let each fountain reach its own maximum, place them more than 20 meters apart.
- Wisps can still appear during daytime if rain or storm effects create sufficiently dark conditions.
- Weather effects from some boss encounters can temporarily allow wisps to spawn outside normal nighttime conditions, as long as the player stays within the affected area.
- Because wisps despawn when the light returns, staying near the source of the darkness is important.
- Low-light biomes such as the Swamp can also support wisp spawning, provided the area remains loaded.
The recipe for the Wisp fountain uses Yggdrasil Wood and a Wisp. Its presence fits the Mistlands progression theme, where wisps are used to counter fog and improve visibility. The fountain’s flavor text is also a reference to Aliens, specifically the line spoken by Newt.
