Overview

The Mini Fusion Power Station is an advanced power facility that burns Deuteron Fuel Rods to generate electricity through nuclear fusion. It has the same shape and footprint as the Thermal Power Plant, but delivers far greater output and runs much more efficiently on fuel, making it one of the most compact ways to support a large grid.

At full load, it consumes one rod every 40 seconds and produces about 15 MW, or roughly seven to nine times the output of a Thermal Power Plant depending on how it is compared. Its power output is also responsive to demand, so it automatically burns less fuel when the grid load is low. In practice, this makes it especially valuable for stable late-game power setups, where a relatively small number of plants can support very large industrial areas.

The main limitation is not the building itself, but the fuel supply chain. Deuteron Fuel Rod production requires a broad set of resources and intermediate products, including deuterium, iron, copper, titanium, stone, crude oil, and water. Titanium is a particular bottleneck on the starting planet because early worlds do not contain titanium veins, so full-scale use usually requires interstellar expansion or resource import lines. Super-magnetic rings and titanium alloy also add significant complexity to the production chain, which makes the fuel system much more involved than that of Thermal Power Plant or Solar Sail based generation.

Because of its compact size and high output, the Mini Fusion Power Station is useful anywhere, regardless of weather or sunlight. A practical trick is to carry one together with Deuteron Fuel Rods in your inventory so you can quickly power up a newly placed Interstellar Logistics Station, or rapidly recharge several Wireless Power Towers and your mech. After the temporary power setup has served its purpose, it can simply be picked up and moved elsewhere.

A few points make it especially effective:

  • It is ideal for remote outposts and newly expanded systems because it does not rely on wind or solar conditions.
  • It can be used to bootstrap infrastructure on an undeveloped planet, giving enough power to support self-sustaining operations after arrival.
  • Its high output means that even hydrogen obtained from X-ray Cracking can be enough to carry a factory through to Mission Completed! if the fuel line is built early.
  • When power facilities are connected directly with a Sorter, fuel can be transferred between them automatically. This is particularly useful for Mini Fusion Power Stations, since their fuel consumption rate is manageable compared with Thermal Power Plant setups.

Once established, Mini Fusion Power Stations provide a dense and reliable source of electricity that greatly reduces power shortages and frees up space for more production buildings.
