Thermal Power Plant

Overview
The Thermal Power Plant is a power facility that burns chemical fuel to generate electricity. It is the standard midgame thermal generator in Dyson Sphere Program and can accept a wide range of burnable items, including plant fuel, logs, coal, energetic graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes, hydrogen, deuterium, crude oil, refined oil, organic crystals, fire ice, and hydrogen fuel rods. Like all thermal generators, it converts fuel at only 80% efficiency, so the usable energy is lower than the value shown in the fuel tooltip.
A Thermal Power Plant produces up to 2.16 MW at full load. Because its output is tied to demand, it does not waste fuel at light load; instead, fuel is consumed more slowly when the grid is not requesting full power. Burn duration depends on the fuel’s MJ value after the 20% efficiency loss. For example, coal’s displayed 2.7 MJ becomes 2.16 MJ in the plant, which is enough for one second of full-power operation.
Thermal Power Plants are especially useful when a factory needs a reliable source of steady power, or when surplus material needs to be disposed of safely. They can be placed directly after a storage unit so that excess byproducts are burned only after the storage fills up, preventing output lines from backing up. A common use case is burning extra hydrogen generated while refining fire ice into graphene.
They can also be chained together by placing the buildings next to each other and using
A few practical points make Thermal Power Plants easier to use efficiently:
- They burn a wide variety of fuels, but not everything:
Deuteron Fuel Rod,
Antimatter Fuel Rod, and
Accumulator (Full) are handled by dedicated facilities instead.
- Their fuel consumption scales with grid demand, so one fuel item always yields the same total energy; it simply burns faster under heavier load.
- Once Orbital Collectors are researched, hydrogen and fire ice become renewable inputs, allowing Thermal Power Plants to act as a renewable power source as long as the resources are not being transported by Space Warpers.
- Because fuel production has its own energy cost, advanced fuels are not always a net gain. In some cases, the power spent crafting denser fuels and moving them with Sorters can offset much of the advantage.
The Thermal Power Plant is compact and strong for its size, making it a practical way to power early and midgame industry until larger renewable or high-density power systems take over.
