Overview

Foundation is a surface leveling material used to reshape terrain in Dyson Sphere Program. It does not let you freely sculpt landforms; instead, it levels ground to zero altitude. Placing Foundation on raised terrain produces Soil Pile, while placing it on ocean tiles or low-lying areas consumes Soil Pile. If the Foundation has been spray-coated, the proliferation bonus applies, so it yields more Soil Pile when used on high ground and costs less Soil Pile when used on low ground.

When placing Foundation, you can also choose a decorative pattern or place it without decoration, in which case it only performs the leveling function. This makes it the standard tool for turning uneven or water-covered areas into usable factory space, especially on planets with limited buildable land.

Foundation is especially valuable early in the game because the oceans around the starter planet can restrict factory size and force awkward layouts. Wind Turbines are a notable exception, since they can be placed without Foundation, but most other structures benefit from having a level surface. A local production line for Foundation is usually worthwhile, and it is easiest to set up where Iron Ore and Stone veins are close together so both inputs can be supplied efficiently. The same logic applies on any planet with both Iron and Stone available, since producing Foundation locally avoids spending interstellar logistics capacity on this basic material.

It is also extremely useful on oceanic planets and other lush planets, where space for logistics infrastructure is limited and many resources are harder to bring in through interstellar logistics stations. For large-scale terraforming, it takes exactly 325,600 Foundation to fully pave a planet. To make the process faster and avoid missing sections, increase the fill-in square size with the + button while laying it down.

Foundation is one of the main components in factory expansion planning, since it converts otherwise inconvenient terrain into predictable building space. Its role is less about altering geography for its own sake and more about creating a clean, efficient foundation for large production lines, planetary logistics, and dense endgame layouts.
