Dark Fog Matrix

Overview
Dark Fog Matrix is a special matrix dropped by Dark Fog units at level 12 or above. It is one of the materials tied to hidden technologies, and it is also used in the production chain for
This item is used differently from the standard science matrices. Dark Fog Matrix research is performed manually by
Icarus through the inventory-based research interface, rather than through the normal science matrix system. In practice, this means it behaves like early-game manual research: you must keep the matrices in your inventory and unlock hidden technologies one by one as the required Dark Fog materials become available.
Dark Fog Matrix drops start appearing before they can be spent on anything useful. Dark Fog only begins dropping the materials needed for the first hidden technology at level 15, so the matrices obtained at level 12 to 14 are usually best stored until the corresponding unlock becomes available.
The hidden technologies associated with Dark Fog Matrix and related Dark Fog drops are:
- Matter Recombination, unlocked by looting
Matter Recombinator from Dark Fog level 15; this unlocks
Re-composing Assembler.
Digital Analog Computation, unlocked by looting
Silicon-based Neuron from Dark Fog level 18; this unlocks Self-evolution Lab.
Negentropy Recursion, unlocked by looting
Negentropy Singularity from Dark Fog level 21; this unlocks
Negentropy Smelter.
- High-Density Controlling Annihilation, unlocked by looting
Core Element from Dark Fog level 24; this unlocks
Strange Annihilation Fuel Rod.
Because the item is tied to hidden technologies, it is often worth keeping a reserve once Dark Fog units begin dropping it. That way, when the prerequisite materials appear, you can research the new technology immediately instead of waiting to accumulate matrices afterward.
Dark Fog Matrix is classified as an item in the Components and Dark Fog categories. In gameplay terms, it sits alongside other Dark Fog drops that open up late-game automation and production upgrades, making it an important bridge between combat progression and advanced industry.
The item is also notable for its lore flavor: research using Dark Fog Matrix is framed as forbidden by COSMO’s technology ethics committee, which is why it must be handled through Icarus rather than through the usual automated science workflow.
