Solar Panel

Overview
Solar Panels are an early-tech renewable power building in Dyson Sphere Program. They generate electricity from sunlight, with output determined by the planet’s solar energy ratio and the panel’s position on the planet’s surface. Because they do not work at night, their total daily output depends on latitude and local season, and their practical value varies significantly from planet to planet.
They are often available before more advanced power solutions, but they are not a universal replacement for Thermal Power Plants. Solar Panels require
The standard material requirements listed for Solar Panels are 6

A Solar Panel’s output rises after sunrise and falls toward sunset, but it continues producing a small amount even when the sun is just below the horizon. With zero axial tilt, panels near the poles maintain about 85.72% output on average, while equatorial placement averages lower. In general, the values range from about 54.87% at the equator to about 81.14% near the latitude cutover, with only a small gain approaching the poles. The actual power output is 360 kW × current strength, so the maximum output is limited and depends on illumination.
Common ways to use Solar Panels include:
- Ringing a planet’s equator with panels for a simple, continuous layout.
- Placing panels near both poles, which often gives better daily output and allows a steadier supply with fewer panels.
- Using them with Accumulators to store daytime excess and cover nighttime demand.
- Treating them as a supplement to Thermal Power Plants when you want to reduce fuel use without fully replacing your main grid.

Planet placement matters. Solar belt layouts around the equator are easy to understand but force panels to be distributed around the whole planet. Polar placement is more flexible and can be more efficient, especially on planets with strong axial inclination, where the summer-side pole receives more daily energy than the winter-side pole. As a result, Solar Panels are especially useful on low-demand worlds, mining planets, or any setup where you want fuel-free power and can afford the footprint.
