Overview

The Structure Matrix is one of the five basic source codes that keep the CentreBrain simulating, and it is the yellow matrix used for mid-game research. It becomes a major milestone in progression because its recipe depends on Titanium Crystal, which in turn requires Titanium ingots and Organic Crystal. Since Titanium does not spawn on the starting Planet, producing Structure Matrices is often the first time the player must establish serious off-world logistics.

Its research role is especially important because the tech that unlocks Interstellar Logistics Station requires Structure Matrices, while also being the key to automating their production. In practice, this creates a short but significant bootstrap phase: a small amount of Structure Matrices can usually be crafted manually to unlock the logistics chain that will eventually mass-produce them. Once that is done, Structure Matrices mark the point where the game opens up into interplanetary and then interstellar expansion.

The basic recipe is relatively straightforward in concept, but the ingredients are not. Diamond is made from Coal through several smelting steps, and Titanium Crystal requires both Titanium ingots and Organic Crystal. That means the real complexity lies in building the supply chain for the intermediate products, not in the matrix itself. Because of this, proliferating the inputs can be worthwhile; the extra output from the coal-heavy Diamond line and the overall complexity of the chain can make the investment pay off.

  • A single smelter making Diamonds with Energetic Graphite is enough for four Matrix Labs making Structure Matrices.
  • One Assembling Machine Mk.II making Titanium Crystals is enough for two Matrix Labs making Structure Matrices.
  • One Assembling Machine Mk.I is enough for 1.5 Matrix Labs, and two are enough for three.
  • One Assembling Machine Mk.III is enough for three Matrix Labs.

The toughest part of early Structure Matrix production is usually Titanium Ingot supply. Because the starter Planet has no Titanium Vein, the player must travel to another Planet to mine it, then build at least a basic production setup there with power, miners, smelters, and often defenses. At first, this usually means repeated manual trips between planets to move materials until logistics are established.

Organic Crystal is another major bottleneck. Its production uses resources available on the starting Planet, including Crude Oil and Coal, but the full chain is long and infrastructure-heavy. It also requires a significant amount of power and land, so production is easiest on a large area with concentrated oil wells. For a 1/s Organic Crystal line from Crude Oil, the total build becomes very large, so planning the oil processing block carefully matters.

Because Structure Matrix research often demands large quantities, a small production line can noticeably slow tech unlocks. Expanding the line is one option, but Proliferator also speeds progress effectively, especially when applied both to matrix production and to the research line itself. Using Proliferator Mk.II on the matrix line increases output, and applying it to the lab line makes each unit count for more research progress. For research that consumes large amounts of Structure Matrices, this can dramatically reduce the total number required. A storage buffer before the labs is also useful, since matrices will continue to accumulate whenever the research line is not consuming them.
