Overview

Energy Matrix is the second core science matrix and is one of the six scientific matrices used in the game. It is the red cube, and it is required for a large portion of the research tree as well as for fueling the AI Core. It is crafted from Energetic Graphite and Hydrogen, making it the first matrix that depends heavily on oil processing rather than only mined solid resources.

Researching Energy Matrix unlocks Titanium Smelting and the Planetary Logistics Station, which in turn requires Titanium Ingots as a component material. It also leads onward to the yellow Structure Matrix, so it is a key transition point in mid-game progression.

Its recipe is more demanding than that of Electromagnetic Matrix: each matrix requires two of each input, and the crafting time is longer as well. Because of this, the same number of Matrix Labs that worked for the previous matrix usually will not be enough to sustain the same research throughput. If production is scaled up without adjusting supply, input belts can easily become the bottleneck, and upgraded or parallel conveyor lines may be needed to keep each lab fed.

Hydrogen is usually the main challenge. Early production typically relies on an Oil Refinery, with Oil Extractors and a refinery chain supplying the needed flow. Since refinery operation draws significant power, the refined oil byproduct can be burned in Thermal Power early on to help support the system. If power is available and the oil output is not immediately needed, the refined oil can also be stored in a Storage Tank to smooth the transition into the next stage, where it becomes a required input for Structure Matrix.

Practical production notes:

  • Energy Matrix can be made from a Crude Oil seep alone without external power, but this is only a very limited setup.
  • Because it takes twice as long to craft as Electromagnetic Matrix, Energy Matrix production usually needs roughly twice as many Matrix Labs to match the earlier science rate.
  • If the input supply is not expanded at the same time, the production line will stall even if the labs themselves are sufficient.
  • Hydrogen can later be supplied more efficiently by Orbital Collectors on a Gas Giant, which removes much of the manual burden of gathering it.
  • Coal processing should be arranged efficiently, since Energetic graphite is the solid component used alongside Hydrogen.
  • It is possible to convert coal into graphite through alternating cracking and refining setups, allowing efficient production paths that avoid net consumption of hydrogen or oil in the broader chain.

Energy Matrix therefore marks the point where science production becomes closely tied to petroleum processing, and building a stable supply chain for both Hydrogen and Energetic graphite is the main requirement for keeping research moving.
