Overview

The Electromagnetic Matrix, often called the blue cube, is one of the six scientific matrices in Dyson Sphere Program and the first one that appears in the science matrix lineup. It is the foundation of scientific and technological research, and a large portion of the research tree depends on it. Because of that, players usually begin producing it early and then transition from hand-crafting to full automation as soon as possible.

Electromagnetic Matrices are one of the first automation goals a new player will complete. Early research can be satisfied by manual crafting in the replicator, but the item becomes important enough that a dedicated production line is worth setting up quickly. As with the other science matrices, it is consumed by Matrix Labs for research, so steady output matters more than occasional bursts of production.

A common early benchmark is a basic stack of Matrix Labs. At the base technology level, Matrix Labs can be stacked three high, and a stack of three produces 60.0 Electromagnetic Matrices per minute. That is a useful target when planning an initial automation line.

The recipe is simple, using only Iron Ore and Copper Ore. This makes it easier to establish than later matrices, especially if iron and copper veins are close together. Placing production near both resources reduces the number of Conveyor Belts needed and keeps the logistics simple. The input ratio is 2:1 iron to copper, so choosing an iron deposit with larger reserves helps the line last longer.

A practical setup for early production is to keep Circuit Board and Magnetic Coil production running continuously and feed them into Matrix Labs. With one continuously running Assembler Mk.I making each of those components, the resulting supply is enough for 4.5 Matrix Labs worth of Electromagnetic Matrix production. In many games, later science matrix production becomes the real bottleneck, so there is usually little need to overbuild the Electromagnetic Matrix input chain far beyond what research currently requires.

  • The Electromagnetic Matrix is the first scientific matrix encountered in the game.
  • It is used as a basic research material for a large part of the technology tree.
  • It can be hand-crafted early on, but should be automated as soon as practical.
  • A three-high Matrix Lab stack is a useful early production target.
  • Producing it near both Iron Ore and Copper Ore nodes minimizes belt use and simplifies setup.
  • Since later science matrices often limit progress more than this one, large-scale overproduction is usually unnecessary.
