Demi-Human Swordmaster
Overview
Demi-Human Swordmaster is a small, nimble demi-human enemy that appears in Nightreign. They are diminutive in stature with mottled, pale skin, milky clouded eyes, and wisps of white hair on scalp and face. They wear a filthy loincloth and a tattered cape clasped with rope, and notably possess five fingers — a physical detail that separates them from other demi-human varieties. Despite their withered appearance, they wield magical swords with surprising speed and lethality.
Demi-Human Swordmasters appear in both open areas and special encounters within Nightreign. Two may be encountered in the Realm of Shadow: one guards Demi-Human Queen Marigga on the Cerulean Coast and another wanders the southern lake at Charo's Hidden Grave. A named boss variant, Demi-Human Swordmaster Onze, serves as the boss at Belurat Gaol. A Spirit Ash version named Demi-Human Swordsman Yosh is also recorded.
Combat behavior emphasizes mobility, magic-imbued slashes, and deceptive vanishing techniques. Their moveset includes:
- Bubble Grab: the left hand glows blue; a hit shoves the target into a bubble, then the swordsman reappears and telepathically throws the victim aside. Deals Magic damage.
- Line of Stars: imbues the sword to extend reach, performs multiple slashes with follow-up extensions and an upward leap finishing with a downward slam. Deals Slashing and Magic damage.
- Vanishing Slash and Vanishing Thrust: vanish into dust or sidestep before reappearing to deliver high-damage slashes or thrusts; Vanishing Thrust chains into further strikes and mixes Piercing then Slashing damage.
- Wing Stance: advances while performing up to four slashes with a delayed final strike.
- Swift Slash, Jumping Slash, Uppercut Slash, Disengage, Parry: a variety of single- and multi-hit slashing attacks, evasive jumps, and a parry stance that dashes invulnerably then counters.
Practical notes for engagement and loot:
- The Swordmaster pairs melee slashing with magic damage; expect mixed physical and magical defenses to be relevant when preparing gear and spells.
- Vanishing and teleport-like moves create sudden repositioning — track their vanish animations and be prepared to dodge the reappearance rather than the initial disappearance.
- The Parry action includes an invulnerable dash; avoid predictable attack timings immediately after a blocked hit to prevent the counter double slash.
- Line of Stars and Vanishing Slash combine reach and magic damage; keep lateral movement and stamina management to avoid multi-hit combinations.
- Standard drops include Starlight Shards (guaranteed), with low chances to drop Glass Shard (4%), Spiritgrave Stone (4%), Polter Stone (3%), and String (5%). Use Spirit Ash or lure individual Swordmasters when possible to reduce risk from chained attacks.
Visual references depict the Swordmaster executing Line of Stars and the boss Onze in Belurat Gaol, illustrating both their magical-sword animations and the boss variant's presentation.
