Overview

The Foundry is a Vulcanus-only crafting machine introduced in the late game. It is used to cast molten metal into plates and to produce a number of advanced items directly, including belts, underground belts, splitters, pipes, gears, steel plates, and several other components. One Foundry recipe must be selected before it can begin processing, and the machine has a built-in productivity bonus that makes it unusually efficient compared with furnaces or assembling machines.

Most Foundry recipes are more resource-efficient than their standard counterparts, and its bonuses apply even to recipes that normally do not benefit from productivity modules. In practice, the Foundry has a very strong advantage because its inherent productivity also affects the production of molten iron and molten copper, which are the basis for many of its other recipes. With its default crafting speed and productivity bonus, it can turn ore into molten metal at an effective rate far above the nominal recipe values.

The Foundry’s recipe set is split between recipes usable only on Vulcanus and recipes usable anywhere. On Vulcanus, it can refine lava into molten iron or molten copper, craft metallurgic science packs, produce the Foundry itself, and make higher-tier logistics parts such as Turbo transport belts, Turbo underground belts, and Turbo splitters. It can also craft a Big mining drill. Anywhere, it can cast molten iron and molten copper from ore, convert molten metal into plates, and directly make iron gear wheels, iron sticks, pipes, pipe to ground, concrete, low density structures, copper cables, and tungsten plate. Non-unique recipes usable anywhere include Holmium plate and the full belt progression from Transport belt up to Express splitter.

A few important practical points make the Foundry especially valuable:

  • Casting iron, steel, and copper plates directly is often more efficient than using furnaces or assemblers.
  • Because the Foundry can also cast many products made from those plates, there are alternate production chains. For example, gears, sticks, pipes, and pipe to ground can be made by casting iron plates first and then assembling the final item.
  • Copper cable can be produced by casting copper plates and then assembling cables, or by feeding them into an electromagnetic plant.
  • Low density structures can be made either from cast copper and steel plates, or by casting iron plates and smelting them into steel first.

These alternate chains can be more resource-efficient than casting the final product directly, but they usually require more machines and sometimes higher-tier module setups to match output rates. The choice depends on whether the player wants maximum raw efficiency or fewer buildings and simpler flow. For steel in particular, the balance can shift with infinite productivity research and high-quality productivity modules, since the Foundry’s built-in productivity and extra module capacity interact strongly with long-term scaling.

The Foundry’s concrete recipe is also notable: unlike the regular concrete recipe, it can benefit from productivity modules. This makes the Foundry an especially strong option for infrastructure production on Vulcanus and beyond.
