Overview

Atmo Sensor is a gas pipe sensor that reads the atmospheric pressure of the gas passing through the pipe segment it is attached to and toggles its output based on the pressure threshold you set. It is commonly used in automation for gas storage, gas pumping, and environmental control, especially where a system should only run when there is enough gas available.

Because gas pumps consume a constant 240 W regardless of throughput, an Atmo Sensor set to a threshold such as “above 500 g” can improve efficiency by preventing pumps from running when only a tiny amount of gas is present. It is also useful for avoiding gas overpressure and for allowing geyser handling systems to run only while the geyser is active. In gas generation setups, machines that primarily produce gas, such as the Electrolyzer and Oxygen Diffuser, stop running and display an overpressure warning at 1.8 kg, so an Atmo Sensor can be used to manage nearby piping and storage before that point is reached.

A few pressure-related mechanics are worth keeping in mind when designing automation around it:

  • Most plants require atmospheric pressure in the range of 150 g to 10 kg to grow, though some plants tolerate much lower or much higher values.
  • Duplicants breathe comfortably above 525 g; below 50 g they will hold their breath, and above 4 kg they receive Popped Eardrums.
  • Offgassing elements such as Oxylite and Polluted Water stop emitting at 1,800 g atmospheric pressure.
  • Geysers, vents, and volcanoes can be forced to stop erupting once their output tile becomes overpressured; different sources of eruption have different pressure limits.

Atmo Sensors interact with gas pipe contents, so their value depends on where they are placed and what pressure condition you want to detect. In practice, they are most effective when paired with gas pumps, storage buffers, or geyser taming systems that need to react to pressure instead of running continuously.
