Gas Pump
Overview
The Gas Pump is an early-to-mid game building used to extract gas from the surrounding atmosphere and send it into Gas Pipe. It draws gas from the tile it occupies and can be automated like other powered buildings, making it a standard part of gas collection, base ventilation, and industrial setups.
A Gas Pump’s output can be connected directly to the intake of another building through piping, which will deliver gas to that building. This makes it useful not only for storage and transport, but also for feeding machines that consume specific gases. In practical use, the pump should be placed where the desired gas is concentrated, then connected to a network that can move or use the gas efficiently.
A few operational details matter for efficient use:
- Gas flow always goes from the green port to the white port.
- The pump continues to consume the same amount of power even when it is moving less gas, unless it is temporarily disabled.
- Because of that, placing an Atmo Sensor nearby and setting it to turn the pump off when pressure is below a threshold, such as “above 500 g,” improves power efficiency.
- The maximum drawing rate of a Gas Pump is half the output rate of an Electrolyzer, so one Electrolyzer requires two Gas Pumps to fully handle its output.
- Gas Pipe transport capacity is 1000 g/s, so two pumps are also needed to fully use a pipe’s throughput.
- When pumping from a mixed gas environment, the pump can create packets larger than 500 g in the pipe, but its average extraction rate is still limited to 500 g/s.
The building has a base overheat temperature of 75 °C, so it can overheat if used in hot gas environments. Building material should be chosen according to ambient temperature; Gold Amalgam or Steel are common choices for hotter locations. Unlike many powered devices, the Gas Pump itself does not generate heat while operating.
Because its extraction rate and pipe throughput are both important bottlenecks, Gas Pumps are often paired in groups when servicing gas-heavy systems, especially around electrolyzers and industrial rooms. Proper automation and sensible placement can significantly reduce wasted power while keeping gas transport reliable.
