Liquid Pump

Overview

The Liquid Pump is a liquid-handling building used to draw liquids into a piping system. It is the standard way to move liquids from open pools or reservoirs into pipes so they can feed liquid-consuming machines, be stored in Liquid Reservoirs, or be recirculated in closed systems such as an Algae Terrarium watering loop.

To empty a liquid area, the pump is usually placed at the very bottom so it can access as much liquid as possible. It can also be placed higher when you only want to draw off part of a pool and leave the rest behind. A pump can also be placed at the top of a reservoir as a safety measure if the reservoir is at risk of exceeding capacity, although its limited pumping speed means it cannot guarantee a complete overflow prevention. If you need to move liquid from one reservoir to another, using gravity wherever possible saves both power and time.

A Liquid Pump consumes a significant amount of power while running, so minimizing the number of pumps in a liquid network is usually the best approach. Whenever possible, direct liquid from one machine to another without an intermediate pump, or rely on gravity-fed flow between storage locations. If the pump is deconstructed, any liquid inside it is dropped on the ground as bottled liquid.

  • The pump has a base overheat temperature of 75 °C.
  • When pumping Crude Oil in an Oil Biome, it can overheat unless made from a material with a higher overheat tolerance.
  • Gold Amalgam raises the overheat temperature to 125 °C.
  • Steel raises it to 275 °C.
  • Unlike many other buildings, it does not require floor tiles underneath for support and can be built in mid-air or even mid-liquid.
  • The pump’s liquid range does not always match its building footprint, which can allow superheated liquids to be pumped in a vacuum without overheating the building itself.

A pump’s output can be piped directly into the intake of another building, which sends the liquid straight to that building. This is the basic way to automate delivery to equipment that consumes or processes liquids.
