Canister Emptier

Overview

The Canister Emptier is a gas-handling building that releases gas from canisters into the surrounding area. Its Element Filter can be used to restrict which canistered gases it accepts, letting you set up separate storage areas for specific gas types and avoid mixing gases you want to keep distinct.

Canistered gas is easiest to obtain by using a Canister Filler, or by removing gas directly from a Gas Pipe with a duplicant who has the plumber skill. Once delivered, the Canister Emptier empties the canister into the world at a rate of 250 g/s. A full 200 kg gas canister therefore takes 800 seconds, or 1.25 cycles, to empty. Duplicants will not bring the next canister until the current one has been completely emptied.

There does not appear to be a maximum pressure limit on how much gas can be released into an area. In practice, this allows the Canister Emptier to be paired with a Liquid Airlock to pack a very large amount of gas into a very small room. This is useful for compact storage, but it is labor-intensive because it depends on duplicant deliveries and manual handling.

A few practical points make the building more useful:

  • Use the Element Filter to dedicate different emptiers to different gases.
  • Feed it with canisters produced by a Canister Filler for a controlled logistics loop.
  • If you need to clear a Gas Pipe into canisters, assign the task to a duplicant with the plumber skill.
  • Because the emptier works slowly, it is better suited to storage, buffering, and shipboard life support than to rapid gas disposal.
  • On a rocket, one Canister Emptier can sustain the breathing needs of about 2.5 duplicants when used for oxygen supply.

Overall, the Canister Emptier is a simple but very flexible way to move gases from portable canisters back into the atmosphere of a base, especially when precise gas segregation or high-density storage is more important than automation.
