Overview

The Train is a Portal World location in Abiotic Factor, officially designated IS-0138. Unlike other Portal Worlds, it is constantly in motion, and GATE classifies both the world and the train itself as an Immurement Subject. Its defining feature is that it must remain fueled to keep moving; if it were to stop, the accumulated energy would be catastrophic.

The portal to The Train is found in Manufacturing West, inside a tram station near the old mines. The station is locked and requires a Tram Station Key to enter. By the time the player arrives, the Order has already occupied the train, and Dr. Hammond is the only remaining GATE member keeping it fueled. An Order Captain interrogates him about the train’s purpose and the consequences of letting it stop, but Hammond is too unstable to give a coherent explanation.

The Train contains several hostile soldiers, including Grunts, Medics, Captains, and IS-0139 on top of the train just before the portal. These enemies make the area a combat-heavy traversal segment rather than a simple loot run. The location also includes a number of breakable containers and office items that can be dismantled for materials, including wooden boxes, containers, computer towers, computer monitors, and a radio. One notable loot point is a table in the caboose.

There are also a few useful points of interest worth remembering when exploring the train:

  • A collectible can be found in the second GATE car, down the ladder, on a desk.
  • The Train can be used as a defense against the Leyak and Krasue. If they come within range, even through a wall, its light shines on them, causing them to freeze in place, then disappear and drop Leyak Essence or Frozen Essence.
  • The Train is the first renewable source of furniture players can sleep on to restore Stamina and Fatigue needs, via the Lounge Couch.
  • It is also the first renewable source of Manufacturing Wood Crate and Mine Crate materials.

In GATE’s compendium entry, IS-0138 is described as a recursive, superpositioned mega-location held together by the train’s momentum. The entry emphasizes the danger of the train ever stopping, suggesting that such an event would release an immense amount of energy and tear a hole through local space-time. This framing matches the in-game premise: The Train is not just a transport-themed portal world, but a moving containment problem whose ongoing motion is essential to its existence.
