Manufacturing West
Overview
Manufacturing West is a major location in the GATE Cascade Research Facility, forming the accessible half of the Manufacturing Sector. It sits next to the Office Sector and can be reached by road or Tram. As described in the GATE compendium, this sector is the industrial heart of the facility: it is responsible for designing and engineering research equipment and machinery, as well as fabricating technical and specialist tools for other GATE facilities. The area also reflects the site’s earlier life as a decommissioned lithium mine, which is still visible in the layout and infrastructure.
At the start of the story, the Order has already pushed into this sector, apparently to eliminate GATE staff and confront the entities present, though their motive is not explained. Some staff members remain hidden despite the conflict, including in fortified or concealed positions such as the Blacksmith area. Manufacturing West is the portion of the Manufacturing Sector that the player can explore, while Manufacturing East is referenced but remains inaccessible.
The sector contains several distinct areas and points of interest, including:
- Garage
- F.O.R.G.E, an industrial-like area where The Blacksmith is located
- The Synchrotron, where the named device is found; making it operate triggers an internal implosion that creates a hole leading to a tunnel toward Cascade Laboratories
- The Old Mines / Digsite
- Staff Processing, a small slice of the tutorial area accessible by a two-way Portal in the building before the Mines, specifically the pest dummy room
- Mapping Station
NPCs associated with the sector include Varsha Patel, Crane Operator, Julia Montgomery, The Blacksmith, Kovak, Hank Kettle, Hasta Tria, Sarah Frake, and Douglas. The area also ties into a hostile presence list that includes Pest, Peccary, Exor Monk, Grunt, Medic, Lab Rat, Captain, IS-0139, and Sniper, reinforcing its role as a contested industrial zone rather than a purely exploratory one.
In practical terms, Manufacturing West is one of the first places where the game’s combination of industrial navigation, faction activity, and environmental progression becomes especially clear. Its road and Tram access make it a hub connecting other parts of the facility, while its internal spaces link story progression, hidden staff activity, and technical infrastructure into one of the game’s most important mid-game regions.
