Railway Track
Overview
Railway Track is a railway construction item used to build train routes in Dinkum. It is part of the set of train-related blueprints that unlock after purchasing Locomotive Licence Level 1 from Fletch, alongside Curved Railway Track, Switch Railway Track, and Railway Bridge. Once unlocked, these pieces let players lay out a complete track network for the Train, which can only move when it is on rails and cannot be driven freely off-track.
Railway Track was added in the Animal Tracks Update 1.0.7. The Switch Railway Track was added later in The Great Bite Update 1.0.8, expanding how routes can be controlled at junctions. Railway Track itself forms the standard straight section of rail and is the base piece used to connect turns, bridges, and switches into a functioning route.
Tracks are essential for using the Train because the train cannot operate outside of them. When approaching a switch while driving, the player can hold the associated direction to set the route: A to go left, D to go right, or the left stick on controller. This makes track planning important, since the train will follow the chosen branch at the junction.
- Railway Track can be placed one tile up or down, allowing trains to travel up and down hills.
- Track pieces are 2 × 2.
- Railway Track can be placed under Pergolas, though raising them may improve how the train appears while passing beneath.
- Trains can jump down or across gaps if Railway Track is placed along the ground of the gap.
- Trains cannot pass under bridges, including the Railway Bridge.
- NPCs can walk over tracks, but not over the bridge.
The item is also useful when designing routes that need to handle uneven terrain. Because straight track sections can be placed with small height changes, they can be used to smooth out slopes or connect areas that are not perfectly level. However, bridge placement requires extra care, since trains do not travel under bridge structures even if the route seems otherwise clear.
