Train
Overview
The Train is the fastest land vehicle in Dinkum. It is a track-based vehicle, so it cannot be driven freely across open ground and must be used on a railway network made with Railway Track, Curved Railway Track, and Railway Bridge. To unlock it, the player first needs Vehicle Licence Level 2 from Fletch, which unlocks Locomotive Licence Level 1. After that, the Train blueprint can be commissioned at Crafting Lab Deed by donating 7 Shiny Discs to Franklyn, and it arrives in the mailbox the following morning.
Once unlocked, the Train becomes a practical way to travel long distances quickly, especially on established routes. It has storage space for 24 items, which can be accessed by interacting with the back of the train, and carryable items can also be placed on the top and back. The vehicle can be colored using Paint.
A few placement and movement details are important when building a railway for it:
- Railway Track can be placed one tile up or down, allowing the Train to move up and down hills.
- Track pieces are 2 x 2.
- Railway Track can be placed under Pergolas, although raising the Pergolas may improve the appearance of the Train passing underneath.
- Trains can jump down or across gaps if Railway Track is placed along the ground of the gap.
- Trains cannot pass under bridges, including the Railway Bridge.
- NPCs can walk over the tracks, but they cannot walk over the bridge.
The Train is most useful when a player has already committed to a planned rail line, since its speed and storage make it ideal for transporting goods or covering distance faster than standard travel. Because it is limited to tracks, the main challenge is not handling the vehicle itself but designing a route that avoids bridge clearance issues and uses the terrain-friendly placement options available for Railway Track.
The listed commission cost is Dinks 10, 8, 10, 1, 4, and 4.
